What makes something worth keeping? Collectible began with a bottle cap—inscribed with the word original. I was thinking about a line from Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep: “We are machines, stamped out like bottle caps. It’s an illusion that I—I personally—really exist; I’m just representative of a type.” I took that literally. The original cap was cast again and again: in silver, bronze, red wax, as scented candle, as a lip balm, as grease pencil, a couple of chocolate truffles, a solid lubricant. Each a replica. Each a transformation. Materials repurposed into bottle caps—some edible, some volatile, some functional. Maybe we’re the same, but different. Originals, always reissued.
