R. Galvan explores conditions that shape a sense of self through a conceptual art practice. With an approach informed by their jewelry-making background, Galvan looks closely at the connections between information, presence and objects. They received a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, an MFA from RISD, and a postgraduate fellowship with Duke University’s program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South. Their work has been exhibited at the National Humanities Center, the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, the University of Coimbra in Portugal and most recently at the Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts in Knoxville, TN. Galvan’s writing has been published in the peer reviewed journals Cultural Dynamics and GLQ: A Journal of Lesbian and Gay Studies. Currently, they are a studio resident at the Boston Center for the Arts, an incubator for new creative projects.
Galvan was born in Brownsville, Texas.
