Four Dirty Words was inspired by Logan Pearsall Smith’s writing on how words begin “wrong” and are only made “right” through habitual use. The book shows the sedimentation of language as it is inherited, composed, and absorbed. Made from accumulated layers of thermal print labels of the phrase “Four Dirty Words,” four key terms are revealed: Relevance, Certainty, Self, and Narrative. These words, often treated as neutral or even empowering for some, are interrogated here as sites of tension, expectation, and exhaustion.
Medium: Hand stitched pamphlet, thermal print labels on paper, 20 pages.
